Best Things To Do In Tequila, Jalisco – A Complete Guide

If you love tequila, then a visit to Tequila, Jalisco, is a must.

This charming town isn’t just the birthplace of Mexico’s most iconic spirit—it’s also a showcase of Mexican culture.

From agave fields and world-class distilleries to lively mariachi music, Día de los Muertos traditions, and delicious local cuisine, Tequila offers an unforgettable experience. What more could you ask for?

Just 45 minutes from the city of Guadalajara, Tequila makes for a great day trip.

Tequila, the town, is best known as the birthplace of the drink that bears its name.

The spirit is made from the blue agave plant native to this area.

A visit to a blue agave field is one of the highlights of visiting the region of Jalisco.

The history and culture behind tequila production have made the town and the surrounding areas a World Heritage Site.

It was also named a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) in 2003 by the Mexican federal government.

The first large-scale distillery was created in 1600, and over the colonial period, demand for the drink resulted in some of the oldest, still-operating enterprises in this area.

The largest and best known of the tequila distilleries is Jose Cuervo.

However, there are several smaller and less well-known distilleries in the surrounding area.

Even if you don’t drink tequila (like me), Tequila is still a fantastic place to visit.

With its rich history, charming streets, and delicious food, spending a day here is a fun and memorable experience.

Getting to Tequila

There are several ways to get to Tequila if you’re staying in Guadalajara:

Rent a car and Drive

Probably the easiest and fastest way to reach Tequila is to rent a car and drive.

You can stop on your way at an Agave plantation like La Cofradia or go straight into town.

Hire a taxi or use a minivan service for the day

Another great way to visit Tequila is by hiring a private driver.

They can take you not only into town but also to agave plantations outside the main tourist areas.

Many drivers will wait for you and even guide you to less crowded spots.

If a private driver isn’t in your budget, you can also join a full-day tour on a shared minivan, which includes transportation to Tequila and visits to key attractions.

Take the Tequila Train by Jose Cuervo

If you’re a tequila lover, you may want to splurge on the tequila train.

Leaving or arriving at Guadalajara train station every Saturday, you can ride the José Cuervo Express.

Travelers can choose between two itineraries:

• Sunrise Itinerary: Depart Guadalajara by train in the morning and return by luxury bus in the evening.
• Sunset Itinerary: Depart Guadalajara by luxury bus in the morning and return by train in the evening.

Both options provide a comprehensive tequila experience, including tequila tastings, distillery tours, and cultural shows.

What to do in Tequila

Visit an agave plantation – La Cofradia

Since I don’t drink tequila, I chose to visit Tequila with friends by car.

We went to La Cofradía, a smaller distillery popular with locals for parties and special occasions.

It features several activity rooms and an excellent restaurant where we enjoyed lunch.

In the evenings, guests can enjoy live mariachi music.

For a truly unique stay, you can even spend the night in a “Barrica”—a barrel-shaped hotel room!

Another unique thing about La Cofradia is its collection of Catrinas.

During my visit to Jalisco, I fell in love with these iconic figures and what they represent.

As a central symbol of Día de los Muertos, the Catrina embodies the cycle of life and death.

With her elegant dress and signature skull makeup, she reminds us to embrace and celebrate life, even in the face of death.

La Cofradía’s second-floor activities room showcases a stunning collection of Catrina dolls and memorabilia.

Exploring the display was both fascinating and beautiful— such a fun experience!

In addition to lunch, you can schedule a tequila tasting at Taberna del Cofrade.

Or you can stay the night in one of their themed barrel-shaped hotel rooms.

Whatever you decide, a visit to an agave plantation, especially La Cofradia, is a must-do when visiting Tequila, Jalisco.

Visit Tequila Town

After visiting the agave plantation and enjoying a great lunch, head into town.

We parked close to the parish of Santiago Apostol, a simple stone building from the 17th century.

This is a pretty and traditional small-town church. It reminded me of my Sunday visits to church with my grandmother.

Just steps from the parish, you’ll find the Tequila Museum, José Cuervo, Casa Sauza, and plenty of great shops.

One of the best spots you should visit is Fábrica La Rojeña, which is part of the Mundo Cuervo group.

This distillery offers tequila tastings, a margarita bar, and special events.

It also features a collection of tequila memorabilia that’s worth exploring!

Tequila Town Plaza

After exploring Tequila’s history, wrap up your day with a visit to the Plaza.

Here, both locals and tourists enjoy shopping, dining, and relaxing.

The Plaza is a lively hub where you’ll find music, children playing, and friends gathering after school..

If you haven’t yet, grab a souvenir from one of the local shops.

If you’re hungry, enjoy a meal or a snack at a restaurant before heading back to your hotel.

Day Trip To Tequila, Jalisco

With its proximity to Guadalajara, Tequila makes for a fantastic day trip.

Even though I don’t drink tequila, I had an unexpected and delightful day exploring Tequila.
