A Cultural Long Weekend In Paris
One of our favorite ways to spend a long weekend, as a mother-daughter duo or on solo adventures, is to spend our days in art museums and our evenings enjoying live music.
Catching a ballet, opera, or concert is always high on our list. We love exploring both old masters and emerging artists.
That’s why many of our shorter getaways are weekend trips to cultural cities like New York and Paris.
These places feel magical to us, where we can lose ourselves in galleries by day and be swept away by music at night.
Paris is one of those cities where you could easily plan a perfect weekend around museums and a little evening music.
Below, we share how we fill our days and nights on a perfect long weekend in Paris.
These work for a solo escape or for a trip with someone you love traveling with.
You’ll also find a list of museums and performance venues to help you shape the weekend around your own interests.
A Cultural Weekend in Paris: How to Structure Your Day
For us, a perfect cultural weekend in Paris often looks something like this.
Daytime
We typically plan to visit one museum per day, because we like to take our time and savor the artwork.
If, like us, you prefer to take it easy during your visit, then planning for one museum per day should work perfectly.
If on the other hand, you move quickly through museums, you may be able to fit in more than one of the smaller museums in one day.
This is especially easy with museums that are close to each other.
For example, you can probably fit in Musée de l’Orangerie with Jeu de Paume just across the park.
You can probably enjoy lunch, and time in Jardin des Tuileries, and even fit a little shopping between the museum visits.
When planning your days, be realistic about how much time you have for your visit.
Opening hours, flight itineraries, and other factors can affect how much time you realistically have to explore a given museum.
When you have a short day, you can explore one of the smaller museums like Petit Palais or Musée Picasso.
When you have full days, you can plan to visit bigger museums like Centre Pompidou, the Louvre, or Musée d’Orsay.
We’ve made it a habit to book tickets online in advance, which helps us skip the long queues.
This is especially helpful at high-traffic museums and on weekends. We recommend you take advantage of online tickets if possible.
Something we enjoy when visiting these larger museums is the excellent cafés, perfect for a leisurely lunch or a well-earned snack mid-visit.
Another way to fill in full days is with museums that require a bit of travel, like the Fondation Louis Vuitton or the Musée Marmottan Monet.
You can take the opportunity to spend the day exploring both the collection and the surrounding neighborhood.
NIGHTTIME
Paris is filled with opportunities to see live performances almost every night of the week.
You can enjoy classical music at the Philharmonie de Paris and the latest Opera at Opéra Bastille.
Another option is to catch a ballet or modern dance performance at the historical Palais Garnier.
This visit has the added benefit of a performance in one of the most beautiful buildings in Paris.
If your music interests veer towards Jazz, Blues, or Contemporary there are many venues around the city where you can catch live performances.
Le Trianon, Le Zénith, and La Cigale often host great performances. Check out Time Out Paris or Paris Je T’aime to see what’s on.
We recommend you purchase tickets before arriving to avoid disappointment.
A wild card possibility is to catch a Cabaret or Burlesque show.
Paris is famous for this type of performance. If you’re curious, consider visiting the famous Moulin Rouge or one of the newer revues, Paradis Latin or Crazy Horse.
Paris Is Full of Possibilities
With more than 30 museums in and around the city center, Paris makes it easy to spend your days surrounded by art, music, and live performances.
Whether you’re drawn to sculpture, classical painting, medieval tapestries, or modern installations, you’re sure to find something that calls to your heart.
Below are some of the places that are on our favorites list, plus some that are still on our wish list.
We hope this list provides inspiration, so your long weekend is amazing and perfect for you.
