When most people think of Texas they think of enormous fields of cattle and oil. However, in central Texas lies the Texas Hill Country, a region with a distinct climate and landscape.

This region is known for its orchards and wineries, and at the heart of it all is the charming town of Fredericksburg.

Located about halfway between Austin and San Antonio on US-290 you’ll find this western town with deep German roots.

While Fredericksburg is a popular spot for weddings and bridal showers, it’s also a great place to get away with friends.

Beyond its wineries, the old town is a charming western town that invites you to take a stroll down Main Street.

The town even has some delightful museums and historic sites calling out for you to explore.

Things To Do for History Lovers

1. Fort Martin Scott State Historic Site

Fort Martin Scott State Historic Site is an archeological landmark.

Established in 1848, it was one of the first U.S. Army outposts built on the Texas Frontier.

Fort Martin Scott was part of a chain of forts established to maintain peace between settlers and Native American tribes.

It played a key role in protecting settlers and travelers in the area. The outpost was in operation until 1853.

The site contains a refurbished original garrison building and several reproduction garrison buildings.

The site is open to visitors typically from Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

There may be a small admission fee, especially during special events or guided tours, but general admission is often free or by donation.

During our visit to Fredericksburg, this was an unexpected find. As history buffs, we enjoyed the experience very much and learned a lot during our visit.

2. Texas Rangers Heritage Center at Fort Martin Scott

A short distance from Fort Martin Scott, you’ll find the Texas Rangers Heritage Center.

This center features a pavilion and sculptures that commemorate and honor the contributions of the Texas Rangers and their rich heritage.

This place celebrates the legacy of the Rangers who once used Fort Martin Scott as a camp.

The center is typically open from Thursday through Sunday, from 10 AM to 5 PM. 

Admission to the Texas Rangers Heritage Center may be free, but donations are appreciated to help support the center’s educational and preservation efforts. 

The proximity of the Texas Rangers Heritage Center to Fort Martin Scott makes it easy to visit both sites in one trip.

3. National Museum of Pacific War

The National Museum of the Pacific War features artifacts from the Pacific War and stories of WWII.

Located in the center of the town, the museum has multiple galleries that cover the entire scope of the Pacific War.

The museum has a reproduction of a Pacific Combat Zone, a Memorial Courtyard, and even a Japanese Garden of Peace.

The museum is generally open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, except for major holidays.

Tickets are required for entry, with discounts available for seniors, students, military personnel, and children.

4. Pioneer Museum

Also in the center of town, you can find the Pioneer Museum.

A group of 10 historic structures. the exhibits include hundreds of artifacts, audio, and video depicting the lives of the original German settlers of the county.

5. Markplatz von Fredericksburg and Main Street

If you’re short on time or prefer to skip the museums, a stroll down Main Street offers just the right touch of history.

The center of town is Markplatz von Fredericksburg, a green space surrounded by many of the old buildings in town.

Shops, restaurants, Brew Pubs, and Tasting Rooms will keep you busy while you soak up the old-west ambiance.

6. Wildseed Farms

If you love flowers, especially wildflowers, you can not miss a visit to Wildseed Farms. This place is magical!

This 200-acre nursery specializes in preserving wildflowers, particularly Texas wildflowers.

Depending on the season their fields are filled with poppies, lavender, and other wildflowers including stunning Texas Bluebonnets.

They have a variety of small shops in their main building, mostly related to seeds and gardening but also some artisanal foods and handmade articles.

On some weekends there is live music and you can purchase food and beer at their on-site beer garden.

If you love photography you can’t find a better background.

7. Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park

This municipal park has it all. Its 330 acres of rolling hills and a creek provide trails to explore, tables, and grills for a family BBQ and a variety of sports facilities.

If you enjoy being outdoors, this is the perfect way to spend the day outside.

This park provides facilities for camping and RVing so if you’d like to make a reservation visit the website.

8. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

You’ll find Enchanted Rock State Natural Area 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965.

This area is for those who prefer more challenging hikes.

You will need a day pass to visit Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.

There are eight trails of varying lengths and difficulties.

Short trails range from 0.1 to 0.5 miles with the longest trail a full 4.6 miles.

But don’t be fooled, the heat is intense and the terrain rugged in certain sections making the difficulties range from moderate to challenging.

9. 290 Wine Shuttle

Only available on Saturdays from 10 AM to 6 PM this hop-on hop-off service lets you explore 15 of the best wineries along US-290 East for a moderate price.

No driving, just tasting, shopping, and exploring as many or as few wineries as you choose.

10. Urban Wine Trail

If you’d rather enjoy your wine while experiencing the old-town vibes of Main Street you can do that too.

Many of the surrounding wineries have tasting rooms right on Main Street Fredericksburg.

Several of them; like Fat Ass Ranch & Winery on Main, Fiesta Winery, and Grape Creek Vineyards on Main, have retained the charm of the original buildings of the town.

11. Winery Tours

With 60 wineries and cellars in the Fredericksburg area, there is no shortage of options for every taste.

You’ll find wineries with facilities for events like weddings or family reunions while others cater to wine and food pairings.

Many tour companies will coordinate bachelorette parties and wedding anniversaries.

Alternatively, you can join an organized tour that includes tastings at three different wineries and lunch.

Whatever your taste, and budget there is sure to be an option that fits your preference.

12. Winery Stays

If you prefer to mix your wine tasting with a stay in a Vineyard the following Estates offer lodging in addition to wine tastings.

  • Barons Creek Vineyards – Offers luxurious villas on-site, allowing guests to enjoy the vineyard experience overnight.
  • Messina Hof Hill Country – Has a charming bed and breakfast on the property, perfect for wine lovers.
  • Rose Hill Retreat – Though primarily a retreat, it also has a winery, making it a peaceful spot for both wine tasting and staying overnight.
  • Das Peach Haus by Fischer & Wieser – Offers cottages on-site where guests can enjoy the scenic surroundings after wine tasting and peach sampling.

13. Fredericksburg Brewing Co.

Known as the oldest operating Brew Pub in the State of Texas, this place is always full.

They serve lagers and ales along with seasonal specialties. Their food includes Ale burgers and other traditional pub fare.

They have added 12 rooms so you can stay on the second floor of the Brew Pub. But with all the merry-making downstairs we can’t promise you’ll get much sleep.

14. Altstadt Brewery

The brews and ambiance in this brewery are inspired by Bavarian traditions.

With picnic tables set up in beer garden fashion, it feels like a little piece of Germany in Texas.

They have a good menu that includes appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and a variety of steaks.

Altstadt is located on US-290 just outside of Fredericksburg Main Town.

15. Fat Ass Ranch and Brewery

If you’re traveling with a group that has mixed tastes, wine, and beer, then Fat Ass Ranch & Brewery can be an option.

Just outside of Fredericksburg on US-290, you’ll find the winery and the brewery right next to each other.

You can enjoy a tram ride of the ranch and see the grapes or the brewery or just stay under the shade and enjoy your beer.

16. Belly Up Brew Pub

A recent arrival to Fredericksburg this Brew Pub offers some distinctive beers and a variety of Tex-Mex-inspired pub food.

You can find them on Llano Street, not far from Main Street and the Markplatz von Frederiksburg.

In the small area that is Old Town Fredericksburg, there are four excellent options for ice cream.

17. OroBianco Italian Creamery

For an off-the-beaten-path experience, you need to try OroBianco.

The gelato here is made with 100% grass-fed Buffalo Milk.

They also specialize in Texas-made cheese using the same grass-fed Buffalo Milk.

You’ll find them at 421 E Main Street.

18. Clear River Ice Cream, Bakery, and Deli

This place is red, filled with memorabilia, and just sitting at a table makes you happy.

They have salads, soup and sandwiches, some good bakery items, and good old-fashioned ice cream.

You’ll find them at 138 E Main Street.

19. Austin Street Creamery

This is a white house with a walk-up window. They make homemade ice cream in all your favorite flavors and a few with a twist.

You’ll find them at 211 W Austin Street close to the Pioneer Museum.

20. Piccolina

This establishment makes small-batch Italian ice.

With flavors like Blackberry-Lemon and Basil-Lime, you know it will be refreshing.

Their specialty though is a scoop of Piccolina with Prosecco.

A Wonderful Place for Outdoor and Indoor Exploration

Fredericksburg is a lovely town in the Texas Hill Country.
