Segovia is a historic city known for its impressive Roman aqueduct, medieval architecture, and castle.

Located just northwest of Madrid, it offers a rich history, must-see sights, and traditional Spanish charm.

When I lived in Madrid, visiting friends and family always wanted to take a quick trip to Segovia. It’s safe to say I visited Segovia at least three times in one year.

If you’re visiting Madrid and have a day to spare, make sure to add a day trip to Segovia from Madrid to your itinerary.

This post is all about the 7 must-do activities for your Segovia day trip and everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.

How to Get to Segovia from Madrid

Before we dive into the things to do in Segovia, let’s look at the best ways to get to the city.

1. By Train

One of the most popular ways (and my personal favorite) to get to Segovia from Madrid is by high-speed train.

The Renfe AVE and Alvia trains depart from Madrid’s Chamartín Station and take approximately 30 minutes to reach Segovia-Guiomar Station.

  • Tickets and Timing: You can purchase your tickets that same day at the train station. Or you can purchase your tickets in advance through Renfe’s official website or app to secure the best prices. Trains run frequently throughout the day.
  • Getting to the City Center: Once you arrive at Segovia-Guiomar Station, you can take a taxi that will take you to the Segovia Aqueduct in about 3 minutes. Or you can walk from the station which takes around 7-10 minutes.

2. By Bus

Another way to get to Segovia from Madrid is by bus. This option is also an affordable way to travel. ALSA operates buses from Madrid’s Moncloa bus station to Segovia’s main bus station.

  • Duration and Cost: The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and costs less than a train ticket.
  • Advantages: Buses run regularly, and tickets can be purchased on the ALSA website or at the station. The bus usually drops you off in front of the Aqueduct.

3. By Rental Car

If you prefer flexibility, renting a car is a great option. The drive from Madrid to Segovia takes about 1.5 hours via the AP-6 highway.

  • Parking in Segovia: There are multiple parking lots near the historic center where you can park your car and easily explore on foot.

Things to Do in a Day in Segovia, Spain

1. Segovia Aqueduct

Start your Segovia day trip at the iconic Segovia Aqueduct.

The first thing you see when arriving in Segovia either by foot or bus is the impressive Aqueduct.

This ancient Roman engineering marvel is one of the best-preserved aqueducts in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Aquadecut was built during the Roman Empire, it spans approximately 15 kilometers and features 167 arches.

The aqueduct was constructed without the use of mortar, showcasing the incredible precision of Roman engineering.

The best picture of the aqueduct is from the Plaza del Azoguejo, where the aqueduct towers at its highest point and makes for the perfect background.

After soaking in the view from Plaza del Azoguejo, climb the steps beside the Aqueduct to appreciate it from different vantage points. These spots are also great for taking fantastic photos.

2. Walk to Segovia Cathedral

From the aqueduct, make your way through Segovia’s old town streets filled with shops and restaurants until you reach the Segovia Cathedral.

Known as La Dama de las Catedrales (The Lady of Cathedrals), this magnificent Gothic structure is a must-see.

The cathedral’s elegant spires, stained glass windows, and intricate carvings make it a sight to behold.

The cathedral is open daily, and entry is typically around 3-4 euros. Be sure to check their schedule for guided tours or special exhibitions.

Inside, you’ll find grand chapels, beautiful altars, and a museum showcasing religious artifacts.

3. Eat the Traditional Cochinillo for lunch

Every time you say that you visited Segovia people typically ask “Did you eat cochinillo asado?”.

No visit to Segovia is complete without trying “cochinillo asado” (roast suckling pig).

This traditional dish is prepared in a wood-fired oven and features tender, crispy skin.

Many restaurants serve the “cochinillo asado” but Restaurante José María and Mesón de Cándido are popular spots to savor this delicacy.

To emphasize the tenderness of the “cochinillo”, some restaurants perform a ceremony where they cut the pig with a plate.

As Puerto Ricans, we love eating pork, especially during Christmas, so it’s safe to say that we enjoyed eating this traditional dish from Segovia.

Tip:

Pair your cochinillo with a glass of local Ribera del Duero wine for an authentic Spanish dining experience.

4. Explore the Alcazar of Segovia

After lunch, head to the Alcazar of Segovia, a fairytale-like castle that inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

The castle dates back to the 12th century and has served as a fortress, royal palace, military academy, and even a state prison.

The Alcazar is perched atop a rocky hill, offering breathtaking views over the countryside.

You can tour the Hall of Kings, and the Throne Room, and climb the Tower of Juan II for panoramic views.

The Alcázar of Segovia is typically open daily, with hours that can vary slightly depending on the season.

  • Summer (April to October): 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Winter (November to March): 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Entry tickets can be purchased at the entrance or online on their official website. There’s an additional fee to access the tower.

To our surprise, the castle was filled with many historical artifacts. On display were the royal bedding, an armory room with an extensive collection of weapons, and even the dungeons where prisoners were held.

5. San esteban chURCH

While Segovia is known for its iconic landmarks like the Roman Aqueduct and Alcazar, there are also lesser-known sights that add to the city’s charm.

Often overlooked, Iglesia de San Esteban is a historic church located a short walk from the city center.

The Iglesia de San Esteban dates back to the 12th century and is a fine example of Romanesque architecture.

The church’s most striking feature is its impressive bell tower, which stands tall over the city, offering panoramic views of Segovia’s rooftops and the surrounding landscape.

Inside, the church is just as captivating, with a beautiful nave, arched ceilings, and stunning religious artwork.

The church also houses some interesting medieval sculptures and relics, adding to its historical significance.

Though not as widely known as other attractions in Segovia, Iglesia de San Esteban is a great spot for those looking to escape the crowds and explore a quieter side of the city.

6. Enjoy the View at Mirador de la Piedra San Marcos

For some of the best views in Segovia, make your way to the Mirador de la Piedra San Marcos.

This viewpoint offers a spectacular panorama of the Alcazar with the surrounding landscape as a backdrop.

  • Why Visit: The golden hour provides especially dramatic lighting for photography.
  • Getting There: It’s a short walk from the Alcazar, making it an easy stop during your day trip.
  • Relaxation Spot: Take a moment to rest and enjoy the peaceful ambiance.

7. Have a Beer and Tapas in Front of the Aqueduct

Before heading back to Madrid, enjoy some tapas and a beer or wine in Plaza del Azoguejo while taking in the Segovia Aqueduct one last time.

  • Best Spots: There are numerous bars and cafes in the Plaza del Azoguejo where you can enjoy local tapas.
  • Tapas Recommendations: Try torreznos (crispy pork belly) or croquetas (our favorite) to complement your drink.
  • People-Watching: This area is perfect for soaking in the lively atmosphere and watching the sunset behind the aqueduct.

Tips for Visting Segovia

  • Comfortable Footwear: Segovia’s streets are often cobbled, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Weather Preparedness: Depending on the season, bring a hat, sunscreen, or a warm coat. It can get cold and windy during the wintertime.
  • Early Start: Start your day early to make the most of your time and avoid crowds at popular sites.
  • Photography: Bring a good camera or ensure your phone is fully charged to capture the beauty of Segovia.
