Discover the magic of the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens Christmas Illuminations.

I share all the details and tips I learned during my trip to help you plan an unforgettable visit.

Chirstmas Lights Edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh kicks off the Christmas season each year by welcoming visitors to a stunning display of light installations.

Starting in late November and continuing throughout the holiday season, you can stroll through an enchanting garden illuminated by dazzling lights and accompanied by festive music.

When the sun goes down, the lights come on and the Botanic Gardens transform into a wonderland of lights and music.

It is a great alternative to enjoy a night out with family, friends, or even a date.

But don’t let traveling solo stop you from experiencing it.

As you stroll through the captivating scenery, you’ll feel connected to the magic around you, experiencing it to the fullest.

Let me inspire you with a taste of what I saw, heard, and tasted while sharing some important facts to help you plan a great evening.

Getting to the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh

Located only a mile north of Princess Street, reaching the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh is easy.

You can reach the gardens by car, taxi, or bus, and even by foot.

The Botanic Gardens has two entrances, one on the West and another on the East.

Depending on your arrival mode the organizers suggest you purchase entrances as follows:

  • If arriving by car or taxi, choose West Gate tickets.
  • If arriving by bus, select East Gate tickets.  The East entrance is well served by buses 8, 23 and 27.  For bus schedules, you can visit the Lothian Buses webpage.
  • If you are staying near Princess Street or towards the Edinburgh Playhouse like I was, the Gardens are just a 20-minute walk.

When buying your tickets, you will be able to select your entrance gate. Check to see what is more convenient for you based on your mode of transportation.

I wasn’t aware of this detail and ended up walking around the gardens to enter through the West Gate, which was on my ticket. However, since I arrived on foot, it would have been more convenient to use the East Entrance.

Another useful piece of insight is that tickets are sold for specific times, allowing you to choose the entry time that works best for you

This makes it easy to enter at your allotted time when the queues are long during peak days.

Entrance starts at 4:30 PM, with some exceptions. The last entrance slot is at 8:30 PM.

The illuminated trail closes at 10:00 PM, and all customers must exit by then.

So you can plan according to your needs or those of your party.

You can purchase tickets at the venue but I highly recommend buying your timed ticket through their website at Christmas at the Botanics.

During peak times, tickets may sell out, and purchasing them online is cheaper than buying them at the venue.

The Illuminations of the Botanic Gardens Edinburgh

Botanic Gardens Edinburgh Christmas

I love the holiday season. Everything about it is wonderful.

But of all the things that make this season special, I like Christmas lights the most.

I have fond memories of getting in the car with my siblings for a ride around the neighborhood to see the twinkling lights of our neighbors’ homes. Magical!

As a grown-up, I still love to see the lights in my neighbors’ houses, but I feel like a small child when I visit light installations like those of the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.

Whenever I travel during the holidays and I have the opportunity to visit this type of installation I grab the opportunity.

The Christmas illuminations at the Edinburgh Royal Botanics have been one of my favorites.

They were beautiful, imaginative, and different from other installations I have visited around the world.

If you love Christmas lights, you’ll certainly enjoy an evening visit to the Botanics.

I started my visit at the West entrance which is the main entrance to the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens.

You will cross the lobby of the main building where you can visit their shop, great for Christmas ornaments, souvenirs, and a last-minute gift.

You’ll also be able to indulge in a hot drink and cake before embarking on your visit or as a final treat before heading home as the visit ends here.

As you exit the main building, the path guides you to the iconic BOTANICS sign, marking the start of an unforgettable journey.

From there, hundreds of lights surround you, guiding you from one breathtaking light installation to the next, each thoughtfully placed throughout the gardens.

One distinctive feature of the Botanic Garden’s Christmas installations is that many are inspired by the plants themselves

With installations that make the tree roots seem alive and trees illuminated as if breathing with life.

These lights make the garden floors come alive with color, stunning.

My favorite organic installation was near the end, at the firework trees. You have to see them!

Other installations throughout the walk are themed to Christmas music like Elvis’ Rocking Robbin.

At Inverlith House you’ll encounter a charming light projection of Christmas through time. It ends with the now classic song “All I want for Christmas is you”.

There is even an installation that will remind Harry Potter Fans of the floating candles at Hogwarts.

Of course, no Christmas walk would be complete without a peek at Father Christmas.

Little ones will be delighted to meet Father Christmas along the path.

A night exploring the Botanic Gardens Edinburgh Christmas Illuminations is sure to captivate visitors of all ages.

Beyond the Christmas Illuminations

The visit to The Botanics is more than the Christmas illuminations.

Past Inverlith House you’ll find outdoor food stalls where you can purchase food and drinks including mulled wine.

One of my favorite stalls further down the path was the marshmallow roasting. So good!

Of course, the cafes at the East and West Entrance to the Botanic Gardens are open and have a variety of cakes, cookies, and hot and cold drinks.

They even have some vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

Tip

All vendors only accept card or contactless payments, so be prepared to pay this way.

I found the paths easy to walk and there were ramps to accommodate strollers and for accessibility.

There are Toilet facilities at different points along the route. I visited one and it was clean, illuminated, and accessible.

A last observation when planning your visit, Christmas at the Botanics is an outdoor illuminated trail.

So, wear warm outdoor clothing and footwear adequate for winter weather conditions.

I found a hat and gloves adequate for the weather on the night I visited, but be sure to check the weather on the night of your visit and plan accordingly.

If you’re looking for something to do in Edinburgh at night during the holidays, I highly recommend visiting the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Visiting the illuminations at the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens during Christmas is a must-see if you love holiday lights.

So finish the planning, get those tickets, bundle up and have yourself a great night at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh this holiday season.
