In this guide, we will take you through the steps of planning and embarking on an adventure to the great dunes of Erg Chigaga, ensuring you are well-prepared for an unforgettable experience.
Getting to the Sahara
The journey to the Sahara Desert often begins in Marrakech, a vibrant city rich with history and culture. From here, you’ll make your way to the Sahara, typically by road.
Here’s the best route to take:
- Marrakech to Ouarzazate: This leg of the journey takes about 4 hours. You’ll drive through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. This path offers stunning views. Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the desert, is home to the famous Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Ouarzazate to Zagora: From Ouarzazate, continue your journey to Zagora, which takes another 3-4 hours. This route takes you through the scenic Draa Valley, which is lined with palm groves, ancient kasbahs, and small Berber villages. The Draa Valley is a beautiful prelude to the stark desert landscapes that lie ahead.
- Zagora to M’Hamid: The drive from Zagora to M’Hamid is approximately 2 hours. M’Hamid is often referred to as the “End of the Road” as it marks the beginning of the true desert. From here, you’ll switch to a 4×4 vehicle to navigate the sandy terrain.
- M’Hamid to Erg Chigaga: The final leg of your journey is a thrilling 4×4 adventure through the desert, which takes about 2-3 hours. The drive through the ever-changing landscape is an experience in itself, culminating in the sight of the majestic dunes of Erg Chigaga.
During our 15-day Morocco tour, we went from the historic Ait Ben Haddou to M’Hamid, where we took on a bumpy but thrilling 4×4 adventure into the dunes of Erg Chigaga.
But many people arrive at Marrakech and go straight to the Sahara desert for a weekend trip.
Venturing into the Desert
Once you reach M’Hamid, the real adventure begins. You’ll transfer to a sturdy 4×4 vehicle, ideally with an experienced driver who knows the desert well.
The drive to Erg Chigaga is an exhilarating experience, taking you over rocky terrain, through dried riverbeds, and across vast stretches of sand.
The landscape changes constantly, keeping you mesmerized by the raw beauty of the Sahara.
If you’re lucky, your driver will play Berber music to set the ambiance.
The Great Dunes of Erg Chigaga
Erg Chigaga is one of the largest and most impressive dune systems in Morocco, with some dunes reaching heights of up to 300 meters.
As you approach the dunes, the sheer scale and beauty of the desert become apparent.
The soft, golden sand stretches as far as the eye can see, creating a stunning backdrop for your desert adventure.
Settling into the Desert Camp
Upon arrival at Erg Chigaga, you’ll settle into a comfortable desert camp. These camps offer a unique blend of traditional desert living with modern comforts.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Tents: Each tent is equipped with raised beds, sheets, pillows, towels, and covers to keep you warm during the chilly desert nights. The tents provide a cozy and private space to relax after a day of exploration.
- Facilities: While the facilities are basic, each tent typically includes a simple portable toilet and a wash basin. The setup is designed to offer a balance of comfort and authenticity, giving you a taste of traditional desert living.
- Dining Area: A communal dining tent or area is usually set up where you can enjoy meals prepared by the camp staff. The food is often traditional Moroccan cuisine, featuring dishes like tagine, couscous, and freshly baked bread.
