If you’re tired of stressing over gifts or figuring out who’s hosting during Christmas, consider taking a mother-daughter Christmas trip instead.
What started as a fun idea, just the two of us exploring a Christmas market, quickly became one of our favorite traditions.
Now, we make it a point to take mother-daughter Christmas trips every couple of years.
We visit beautiful cities, walk through holiday markets, sip warm drinks, and enjoy the Christmas lights.
If spending Christmas with your mom or daughter and skipping the gift list sounds like fun, then read on.
In this guide, we share our favorite Christmas destinations, but it’s really for you, the moms and daughters looking for something meaningful, magical, and memorable.
What Makes Mother-Daughter Christmas Trips So Special?
Planning a Christmas trip together, gives you both something to look forward to.
The joy starts weeks before December, as you dream and count down the days.
What begins as a holiday turns into memories you’ll both treasure and talk about for years.
Shop for gifts at a Christmas market. Bundle up for a nighttime walk under the lights. Share stories over hot chocolate. Slow down. Reconnect.
That’s the magic of this season.
Our best tip? Pick places that actually feel like Christmas. Go where the lights sparkle, Christmas music plays, and where you can feel the Christmas vibes.
Pack your cozy layers. Say yes to every cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate and let your inner child lead the way.
The best mother-daughter getaways happen when you stay open to joy and a little spontaneity.
1. Alsace, France
Cities to Visit: Strasbourg & Colmar
Hands down, Strasbourg and Colmar are a must-visit if you love Christmas Markets.
These have to be one of the top markets we’ve visited.
Strasbourg is known as the “Capital of Christmas”, need we say more?
The city comes alive with Christmas lights and an explosion of Christmas decorations in every corner.
Timber-framed houses glow with garlands, and the smell of cinnamon, gingerbread, and mulled wine fills the air.
Walk through the Christkindelsmärik, Strasbourg’s main market that dates back to 1570, and feel the timeless magic for yourself.
Another city that feels like a Christmas fairy tale is Colmar.
It’s truly magical.
Smaller than Strasbourg, Colmar charms you with its canals, twinkling lights, and pastel buildings dressed up for the season.

We loved seeing all the local vendors, sampling fresh Christmas treats, and watching kids skate on the ice rink.

We spent Christmas walking through markets that felt straight out of a movie.
At Rathausplatz, the grand city hall towers over rows of stalls filled with ornaments, treats, and handmade treasures.
Then we made our way to Schönbrunn Palace, where they have a Christmas light show that lights up the baroque facade, and you can walk around the festive booths lined up in the courtyard.
But what really made Vienna shine? The Christmas lights are all around the city.
Each neighborhood had its own style, from elegant chandeliers hanging above Graben Street to whimsical displays in the museum quarter.
One of our favorite parts of the trip was heading out each evening just to find them all.
It felt like a treasure hunt across the city, cameras in hand and scarves pulled tight.
