WinterFest Magic: Top Things To Do In Scotland In December

Visiting Scotland in December means stepping into a festive wonderland.

When I explored Glasgow and Edinburgh in December, I found lively markets, glowing light displays, and plenty of seasonal cheer.

This guide shares some of my experiences in WinterFest to help you plan and make the most of your visit to Scotland in December.

Winterfest in Edinburgh and Glasgow is great!

A blend of Christmas market and city fair is a must-see if you’re visiting during the holidays.

From November through January, and certainly all throughout December, you’ll find the city center illuminated with Christmas decorations and a wonderful festive mood.

It’s a great place to visit with family, friends, or for a mother-daughter trip; it’s also worth visiting when you travel solo.

If you love Christmas lights, festive food, and that special holiday energy, add WinterFest to your Scotland itinerary this December.

WinterFest Fun in Glasgow, Scotland

Winterfest in Glasgow centers around George Square and St. Enoch Square.

I stayed at a hotel across the street from George Square, which made it easy to walk straight into the heart of the celebration.

Even with a bit of rain, George Square was lively with families, friends, and holiday cheer.

Things to do in George Square

I loved walking through the beautiful Christmas lights in the square and the surrounding streets.

The giant tree and all the festive stalls made the place lively.

But the standout feature was the 30‑minute light and projection show on Glasgow City Chambers.

Part of the yearly “Christmas Winter Wonderland” illumination, it’s set to music and repeated nightly.

If you enjoy rides, WinterFest has something for everyone.

From a giant Ferris wheel perfect for adults to gentle rides designed for younger children, there’s fun for all ages at the fair.

After you’re finished with the rides, or if food is more your thing, there’s plenty to enjoy.

The air is filled with the smell of sizzling bratwurst and sweet funnel cakes. Stalls serve up warm mulled wine, chili, burgers, churros, and more, something for every craving.

It’s the perfect spot to come with a friend and share a plate or two.

If the chill sets in or you just want a break, head into the heated tent, where you’ll find tables, chairs, and a cozy place to enjoy your meal.

If you’re a music lover, George Square often hosts surprise performances and sets from local bands on the Clutha Trust stage.

Although I didn’t catch any live shows during my visits, WinterFest features dedicated music stages in Glasgow, typically active on weekends.

I’ll admit I was a bit disappointed by the merchandise booths.

One of my favorite parts of visiting Christmas markets is finding handmade, local ornaments to bring home, but I didn’t see much of that here.

While there were some locally made foods and a nice variety of items that could make good gifts, the few ornaments available weren’t handcrafted or unique to Scotland.

Still, browsing the stalls was part of the fun, and the overall festive vibe made it an enjoyable experience

WinterFest activities in St Enoch Square

Not far from the St. Enoch Subway Station, you’ll find St. Enoch Square Winterfest.

This is smaller than the St. George Square venue but with a very similar vibe.

Lots of food stalls, some merchandise booths, and a variety of rides for big and small.

A fun afternoon in Glasgow might start with shopping at St. Enoch Centre, followed by some festive fun at the WinterFest in St. Enoch Square.

Then, take a stroll down Buchanan Street to enjoy the festive lights and the holiday window displays. Magical!

Magical Moments at Edinburgh’s WinterFest

The primary venue for Edinburgh’s WinterFest is the Princess Street Gardens. In the city’s beautiful center you’ll find rides, food stalls and a Christmas Market.

But there’s more, the festivities extend to St. Andrew’s Square and all along George Street.

Princess Street Gardens

Princes Street Gardens is the heart of WinterFest in Edinburgh, drawing crowds of students, families, and visitors.

Like George Square in Glasgow, it features rides for both adults and children, plenty of food options, live music at West Princes Street Gardens, and a variety of merchandise stalls.

Everything is spread out along the length of the gardens, creating a lively and scenic atmosphere set against the dramatic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

Entry is controlled, and the queues can be long, sometimes stretching for hours.

I chose not to go inside so I could spend more time exploring other parts of the city, but the festive buzz outside the gates still offered a glimpse of the fun happening within.

St. Andrews Square and George Street

Entering St. Andrew Square feels like stepping into a winter wonderland as you walk through a tunnel of twinkling fairy lights.

The area is designed with children in mind, but it’s great fun for adults too.

Kids can enjoy Santa’s Stories, a cozy Christmas reading session, or visit the letter-writing station to send a note straight to the North Pole.

And if you love puzzles, don’t miss the Christmas Tree Maze at the center of the square, it’s festive fun for all ages.

After enjoying the festivities at St. Andrew Square, make your way to nearby George Street.

The street glows with beautiful holiday lights, and as you approach Frederick Street, you’ll spot rides that add to the festive atmosphere.

One of the highlights is the Assembly Rooms, with its grand façade beautifully lit for the season. If you time your visit right, you might even catch a flurry of “snow” (yes, bubble-powered magic!).

Don’t miss a visit to the Polar Ice Bar, where you can warm up, or cool down, with a festive drink in a unique setting.
